Tangled TentaclesIt was a typical summer Sunday at Fish Haven Aquarium. Families, couples, and children crowded the halls marveling at the aquatic creatures of all shapes and sizes on display. Everyone was enjoying their time admiring all the beautiful sea life…That is, except for Big Bertha, the giant Pacific octopus, who resided in one of the bigger tanks sitting several feet above the aquarium floor. She preferred to spend most of her time asleep in her tank, keeping to herself and never bothering anyone. The only time she was ever active was lunchtime, when the workers came and fed her a bucket full of shrimp, crabs, scallops, clams, and lobsters. The patrons always enjoyed watching Bertha greedily gobble her meal up before going back to sleep. To them, it was a moment of entertainment. Bertha knew she could keep the humans happy if they made her stomach happy. However, on this particular day, Bertha was not very happy at all. Every time patrons passed by her tank, some annoying kids would show up and try to awaken her from her peaceful slumber by ignoring the sign that said: "Please Do Not Tap On The Glass". Whenever they tapped on the glass, Bertha’s huge eyes would open slightly, and she would look around to find the source of the tapping sound, before closing her eyes again and going back to sleep. Some kids would also try to get her to perform a trick for them like she was some kind of circus animal. Bertha did not like that one bit. It was almost as if those obnoxious human kids were making fun of her species, thinking that a huge, mellow-looking cephalopod wouldn't even dare to harm anyone, even if they made the most ridiculous faces at her. Although she enjoyed getting food from the workers every day, she secretly longed for the day that she could escape the aquarium and return to the ocean, where she could swim free and eat bigger creatures, and she wouldn’t have to be bothered by pesky humans ever again. She had tried in vain to escape her tank numerous times, but the aquarium staff always stopped her from doing so. Escaping at night wasn’t an option for her, because the workers always locked the doors of the aquarium during closing time. She also couldn’t climb through the windows, because if she did, the broken glass that would be left behind would be a dead giveaway. She was an intelligent animal with a well-developed brain, so it wouldn't take too long for her to hatch another escape plan. In fact, she was already starting to think of how she was going to escape her tank this time, and she knew the patrons would be in for a big surprise. Among the small crowd, Bertha noticed a shady-looking woman in a trench coat. Instead of banging on the glass to get the octopus's attention, the woman took out a notepad and quickly wrote a message. She turned the notepad around for Bertha to read, and the message said, "Do a magic trick." Do a magic trick? Well, that was pretty easy. If the woman wanted a magic trick, Bertha would give her a magic trick. However, the only trick that cephalopods knew how to do was to make themselves disappear in a cloud of ink. So, that's what Bertha decided to do. To the patrons' amazement, she squirted ink from her backside that formed a smoke-like cloud. While the humans were distracted, she swam up to the top of the tank and sprung out, letting out a deep bellow from her giant sucker-lined tentacles. When the patrons heard it, they looked up and saw Bertha gazing down at them. Horrified, they all ran for cover. Bertha began to slither her way down the tank and onto the aquarium floor. She quickly began to climb up and down the hallways like a child in a playground, randomly bumping into walls, tanks, and people as she went. The aquarium patrons had different reactions to Bertha crawling around outside her tank. Some screamed and ran, some laughed, and some fainted. The workers gasped in shock when they saw Bertha crawling around, trying to find her way out of the aquarium and to the beach, where she could jump into the sea to join her eight-legged brethren. The workers were not going to let Big Bertha escape again, so they had to do something, and fast. Panic ensued until a voice bellowed from one of the aquarium's loudspeakers: "We've got the octopus! Everyone, get over here and give me a hand!" When Bertha was just about to slither to the front doors to escape, a team of workers grabbed onto her tentacles and pulled her away. "Oh, you've got to be squidding me!" thought Bertha. Just when she thought it was safe to get away, she had been caught by the pesky humans again. The workers and some brave patrons quickly gathered around the octopus tank and began to herd the slippery creature back to her home. Bertha moaned in defeat, knowing that her escape plan had been foiled. Within minutes, Bertha was safely secured in her tank and the aquarium was back to its peaceful state. The giant octopus was exasperated. It was back to the drawing board for her. As patrons trailed out to the front entrance, many could still be heard chuckling about their chaotic day at the aquarium. At least the staff would keep a better eye on Big Bertha this time around...for now....

This much is trueI was first introduced to this Spandau Ballet song back when I was a kid and used to stay up watching late night infomercials, back in the 90's or so. There was this one infomercial that used to air recurringly. Promoting hits from the 80's in a compilation album with this former MTV hostess. They would only play snippets but I'll never forget it's intro. I didn't even know the name of it but that warm, almost melancholic feeling always stuck with me. It was a sharp contrast to the other, more upbeat songs. They were advertising. It wasn't until many years later when I heard that song in it's entirety. At my old workplace If I remember correctly. I eventually looked it up and appreciated it from beginning to end. Guess I have a thing for scores that are subtle but emotionally powerful. After my mother died, this song took an entirely new meaning for me. I remember listening to it repeatedly while locked in my room. That was my way of coping. Whenever I relapse inside the darkest regions of my conscious I'm always left with a cold and detached feeling. As if trapped in an inescapable darkness. And in that darkness I find myself crying out to her. Telling her how much I missed her. How I regret the things I said. How I'd want nothing more than to undo the mistakes I made. But It's too late. My mother is beyond hearing. There's nothing left in the darkness to comfort me as my cries echo through the unknown. And there I am. Standing beside myself. With nothing else to say besides the following, in a symbolic attempt to make amends within myself and within my mind for all the wasted opportunities I had in life. After everything we've been through and above everything else. Always remember this, mom. I love you. That much is true.

Can't submit to anything but the featured folder. You'll have to go to "manage members" to fix this :)
